This month’s Recommended Reading:

Radical Acceptance
Embracing Your Life with the Heart of a Buddha

 by Tara Brach, PH.D.

"Believing that something is wrong with us is a deep and tenacious suffering," says Tara Brach
at the start of this illuminating book. This suffering emerges in crippling self-judgments and
conflicts in our relationships, in addictions and perfectionism, in loneliness and overwork—
all the forces that keep our lives constricted and unfulfilled. Radical Acceptance offers a path
to freedom, including the day-to-day practical guidance developed over Dr. Brach's twenty years
of work with therapy clients and Buddhist students.

Writing with great warmth and clarity, Tara Brach brings her teachings alive

through personal stories and case histories, fresh interpretations of Buddhist tales and
guided meditations. Step by step, she shows how we can stop being at war with ourselves
and begin to live fully every precious moment of our lives.

in the exact same way—and it's the complete opposite of what everyone else does.
Drawing on a wide range of real-life stories, it provides a framework upon which organizations
can be built, movements can be led and people can be inspired—and it all starts with WHY.

Path of Compassion
by Thich Nhat Hanh
This book is an excellent companion to our focus: loving kindness and forgiveness.
It includes stories from the Buddha’s life that help us realize that everyone faces difficulties
and challenges—even elevated teachers.  This is particularly useful to know when dealing with
the courage to forgive, which sometimes seems to require superhuman strength to accomplish.
The reality is, forgiveness is challenging.  It is a worthy challenge, because on the other side of it is freedom and peace.  But it is not a challenge that can be pushed through without compassion
and self-love.  Imagine living in a worldwide culture in which forgiveness is the norm.
That is the vision of Centers for Spiritual Living.

The Zen Commandments
by Dean Sluyter

Drawing on sources from Zen stories and Bible to jazz and rock 'n' roll, from American movies
to Tibetan meditative techniques, Dean Sluyter steers clear of dogma
and emphasizes what works—a sort of spiritual street smarts.

He shows that the state of boundless freedom and happiness isn't something distant or exotic,
but is right here, while you're stuck in traffic or taking out the trash.

And revisiting the Ten Commandments, he shows how on a deeper level
they offer some surprising enlightenment wisdom of their own.
